The Importance of Mulching – As noted on the Arbor Day Foundation website.

Mulch can be very beneficial to your trees.  Mulch beds can minimize mechanical damage to your tree’s base and roots done by lawn mowers, weed trimmers and other equipment you may use in your yard.  This kind of damage can allow disease and insects to invade your tree, so it is important to avoid.

When you use mulch, it should be no more than 3 to 4 inches deep.  Mulch will keep your trees roots warm in the winter and cool in the summer.  As mulch breaks down it provides nitrogen to your tree roots to promote a healthy tree.  When the bottom of your mulch bed sits against your dirt it will turn black which creates a litter layer which in turn supports root growth.
